Test riding the 2011 Harley-Davidson XL1200X Sportster Forty-Eight

Denver Motorcycle Examiner - Sun, 09/05/2010 - 19:11
I had never been on a Sportster before, so when I had the chance this afternoon I took it. And I promptly did something I've never done before: I scraped hard parts. The steering dynamics on this bike apparently are quite different from what I'm accustomed to, so on my first right turn it seemed like I needed to lean it way over to make the turn. I did, and the turn went smoothly, but there was this surprising sound and feeling down by my right foot. I was kind of amazed. On my next right turn I figured I'd try not leaning it so far, and I ended up running wide, across the...

Motorcycle noise debate: Truth and ignorance

Denver Motorcycle Examiner - Thu, 09/02/2010 - 11:29
Will the Governator veto the California bill requiring EPA seals on motorcycle exhausts? That's one of the biggest questions on many people's minds at the moment. That it should be an issue at all is a demonstration of ignorance. Let's start with a recap. Truth Some motorcycles make too much noise. Admit it, it's a fact. Also, some cars and trucks and airplanes and trains and other vehicles make too much noise. This is true as well. So the California legislature decided to copy what has been done in several other jurisdictions in recent years, notably Denver, and has passed...

Indian Motorcycles surviving against the odds

Denver Motorcycle Examiner - Tue, 08/31/2010 - 11:10
In a booming economy it must have seemed like a good idea to relaunch the Indian Motorcycles marque, but by the time the new company rolled out its first models the current Great Recession was under way and worse timing could not have been possible. Was this latest revival attempt doomed once again to be short and abortive? Apparently not. Two years on, which is itself something of a record, the company is not only still in existence, it has rolled out a complete lineup of new bikes for 2011. The entire collection, in a range of colors, was on display in Sturgis during the recent rally, and...

30 years of the BMW GS

Motorcycle News - Tue, 08/31/2010 - 05:47

Full Throttle Saloon: Building for bikers in a big way

Denver Motorcycle Examiner - Sun, 08/29/2010 - 13:36
What started out with the modest ambition of becoming the biggest biker bar in the world has morphed into much more, including a reality TV show, and a traveling road show. We're talking, of course, about the Full Throttle Saloon, outside of Sturgis, SD. Created by Michael Ballard, the Full Throttle is more of a mini-city than a bar, at least in its Sturgis incarnation. Situated on the highway that leads out of Sturgis to the big campgrounds, such as the Buffalo Chip and the Broken Spoke, the Full Throttle offers shops, bars, cabins, restaurants, burn-out pits, and acres of parking. Not...

Iron Mountain Racing takes 3rd in ALCAN 5000

Denver Motorcycle Examiner - Thu, 08/26/2010 - 11:12
From near perfection to barely hanging on, that was how it went Tuesday in the finale of the ALCAN 5000 for John Isenberg of Iron Mountain Racing. Lined up for the last test of the rally, "I was waiting for my minute to come up, watching my clock and it was 56, 57, 58 and then my bike died. I left five seconds late, and then had to stop for a school bus, then had the bike die a couple times on the test, so it was kind of a cluster. I had to limp my bike in, and just barely got into Anchorage." The contrast could not have been sharper as John had scored only one point on the test...
